History

Johnson County was established in 1822, and named in honor of John Johnson, an Indiana Supreme Court judge. Johnson County is also the second fastest growing county in the Indianapolis metro area. The Johnson County Museum of History is located in a historic building that was once a Masonic Temple. The city of Franklin is named after Benjamin Franklin, and it is the county seat. Historical buildings in Franklin include the Old Main of Franklin College, the Artcraft Theatre and Johnson County Courthouse. Camp Atterbury is located near Edinburgh, Indiana. It is a training base of the Indiana National Guard and was built after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
